Common Joint Fractures

Common Joint Fractures: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment Options

A fracture is a break or crack in a bone. Treatment depends on the type of fracture, the bone involved, the severity of the injury, and the patient’s age and overall health.

Hip Fracture

Common Types
  • Intertrochanteric Fracture
  • Neck of Femur Fracture
Treatment
  • Fixation with screws or nails, such as Proximal Femoral Nailing (PFN).
  • In elderly patients, Hip Replacement Surgery may sometimes be required.

Knee Fracture

  • Fractures around the knee may involve:
  • Distal Femur (thigh bone)
  • Proximal Tibia (leg bone)
  • Patella (kneecap)
Treatment
  • Undisplaced fractures may be treated with a knee brace or cast.
  • Displaced fractures may require surgery using plates, screws, rods, or wires.

Shoulder Fracture (Proximal Humerus Fracture)

Treatment
  • Undisplaced fractures may be treated with a brace, arm sling, and rest.
  • Severe or displaced fractures may require surgery using plates and screws.
  • Most patients recover well with physiotherapy and rehabilitation exercises.

Elbow Fracture

Elbow fractures are common in both children and adults.

Treatment
  • May be treated with a POP (Plaster of Paris) cast.
  • Some fractures may require wiring or surgical fixation.

Forearm Fracture

  • Treatment may include:
  • Cast immobilization
  • K-wire fixation
  • TENS (Titanium Elastic Nailing System) nailing
  • Plates and screws

Wrist Fracture

Treatment
  • Simple fractures may be treated with a cast or splint.
  • Displaced fractures may require surgery using plates and screws.

Ankle Fracture

Ankle fractures commonly occur due to twisting injuries, falls, or sports-related accidents.

Common Type
  • Bimalleolar Fracture
Symptoms
  • Severe ankle pain
  • Swelling and bruising
  • Difficulty standing or walking
Treatment
  • Mild fractures may be treated with a cast, splint, or walking boot.
  • Severe or displaced fractures may require surgery using plates and screws.
  • Weight-bearing is usually allowed after adequate bone healing.
